ZOEnergy: reducing CO2 emissions in South East Amsterdam
ZOEnergy is a collaboration between six parties: Arcadiz, DNV GL, ENGIE, TNO and Alliander. The main purpose of ZOEnergy is to contribute in making Amsterdam South East a more CO2 neutral city region. Hereby, ZOEnergy mainly focuses on the energy domain. ZOEnergy has strong relations with local partners and residents, which leads to successful projects that encourage and accelerate sustainability in Amsterdam South east.
Reuse of residual data center heat
ZOEnergy has joined forces with DDA, NUON and Equinix to explore the possibilities to reuse data center waste heat for the heating of nearby households, offices and hotels. Aside from the sustainability benefits, it may also entail a rather profitable business case.
However, there are a few challenges to overcome. First of all, the existing infrastructure is not suited for the low caloric data center heat. Secondly, it’s difficult to match supply and demand. For example, during summer time there is less demand for heat, whereas data center heat supply is continuous.
ZOEnergy has identified several routes in Amsterdam South East that could improve on sustainability in terms of heating. An example would be to use low caloric data center heat and upgrade it instead of using high caloric heat, as it will foster energy efficiency. ZOEnergy also explores the possibilities to combine several local heat resources and to match supply of heat and cooling.
